The musical landscape is rapidly evolving. Professional musicians need to constantly find new ways to stay relevant to audiences. As such, it is imperative for institutions of higher music education to constantly assess the impact of their curricular offerings so that they can foster skills that will help their students keep pace with the changing needs of society. Today, these skills must include critical thinking, self-directed learning, and collaboration. This paper reflects on the journey undertaken by faculty members at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music to revise the curriculum through the introduction of project-based courses, the Bachelor of Music degree in Music & Society, the Music Collaboration and Production (MSMCP) major. All of these changes are designed to empower music graduates, to help make them resilient and to enable them to have sustainable careers.
