This scholarly work aims to explore and analyze the characteristics of traditional Thai folk music, specifically focusing on the procession music of the Klong-Yao ensemble. The study includes the composition of a musical piece titled Rabam Klong-Yao (Hae) for drumset solo. The Klong-Yao ensemble is a traditional and significant element of Thai cultural heritage, predominantly used in celebratory and ritualistic contexts within local communities, especially in central and northern Thailand. Performances typically feature the playing of Klong-Yao drums, accompanied by singing and dancing, all occurring in a procession. The rhythm and melody of the music are adapted according to the type of event or occasion. The Klong-Yao ensemble plays a vital role in various festivals and ceremonies, including ordination rites, weddings, Songkran (Thai New Year), and other events. It contributes to creating a vibrant and joyous atmosphere. Beyond its role as a musical performance, the Klong-Yao ensemble embodies Thai identity, symbolizing joy, unity, and pride in local culture. Efforts to preserve and perpetuate this musical tradition involve organizing performances at festivals nationwide, which enhances awareness and appreciation of its cultural significance.
The composition Rabam Klong-Yao (Hae) for drumset solo is approximately 7 minutes long and is structured into three sections. This work is developed by integrating concepts from traditional folk music with elements of jazz and contemporary music elements. Western musical techniques are then applied to enhance the piece's diversity and complexity. The compositional techniques employed include melodic quotation, syncopation, ostinato, and improvisation, which contribute to the complexity of the composition. Rather than merely arranging existing music, this work synthesizes musical elements from various sources to create a composition with a unique identity. The piece showcases the distinctive features of folk melodies by incorporating characteristic motifs from traditional music. This composition reflects Thai cultural identity and demonstrates fusion of traditional folk music with modern musical practices.
