This symposium session presents a multifaceted exploration of contemporary solo vocal performance, combining artistic demonstration, academic discourse, and practical application.

The session will commence with two days of an interactive workshop designed to equip singers with strategies for creating original performances, primarily through the reinterpretation of existing repertoire. This practical component will feature the participation of three students from the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music, who will work with short a cappella pieces during the session.

The session will culminate with a public presentation by Ema Katrovas and the students. Ms. Katrovas will offer a 30 minute presentation, which will include an 8-minute a cappella performance of "And the fish were frightened," from her artist diploma project Diva Lazarus, followed by a presentation examining the intricacies of constructing solo shows, using the aforementioned solo show as a primary case study. The presentation will also introduce the concept of "poor opera," the focus of the presenter's forthcoming doctoral research at the University of Strasbourg. This will be followed by a presentation of the work done by the students during the 2-day workshop.
