Higher music education is deeply embedded in power relations that influence students’ artistic and professional development. In this discussion, Deborah Kelleher will reflect on the five types of power that exist in our sector, drawing on research from the Association of European Conservatoire's three year research project into power relations, PRIhME.
Traditionally, hierarchical structures have fostered power over, where authority is exerted by educators and institutions, often reinforcing rigid norms and disempowering those who exist outside those norms. However, a shift toward more inclusive pedagogies emphasizes power to, enabling students in particular to take ownership of their creative growth. Collaborative learning fosters power with, where shared agency between teachers and peers cultivates mutual respect and co-creation.
Personal transformation in music education is linked to power within, as students develop confidence, self-expression, and artistic identity. This internal empowerment is essential for emerging musicians to navigate an evolving industry which requires deep levels of resilience and authenticity. Furthermore, conservatoire leaders and educators play a crucial role in power to empower, equipping both staff and students with the skills and confidence to advocate for themselves and future generations. By balancing these power dynamics, higher music education can nurture a new generation of artists who not only excel technically but also challenge conventions and inspire change.
Building on insights gained through the PRIhME project, Deborah's talk explores how power relations influence pedagogical approaches and proposes strategies for fostering empowerment in higher music education. Through embracing diverse power structures, institutions can create an environment that supports innovation, inclusivity, and the development of inspiring future voices.
