Description
Southeast Asian Soundscapes: Tradition, Transformation, and Beyond
This workshop invites participants to explore the dynamic evolution of Southeast Asian music by reimagining Alice in Wonderland within the soundscapes of the region. Through this creative framework, participants will navigate an alternative version of Southeast Asia, where mythical creatures, forgotten histories, and contemporary challenges shape the musical and cultural landscape. Using sound as a storytelling tool, they will uncover how traditional music adapts, resists, and reinvents itself in response to global influences, environmental concerns, and socio-political transformations.
Guiding this exploration is Ajarn Anant Narkkong, a composer, ethnomusicologist, and founder of Korphai Ensemble, known for his innovative work bridging Thai classical and contemporary music. Joining him is Dr. LaVerne de la Peña, an expert in Philippine indigenous and contemporary music, whose research unpacks the deep cultural narratives of Filipino sound traditions. Contributing further is Dr. Mayco Santaella, an ethnomusicologist specializing in the performing arts of the Nusantara region, focusing on traditional, popular, and cross-cultural genres in Malaysian music. Together, they will lead participants through a fantastical reimagining of Southeast Asia’s soundscape, where music, folklore, and present realities converge in a Wonderland of their own making."
